What’s in a Name?

By now you’ve probably heard Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announce he changed his company’s name to “Meta.”

Now, we may know why.

Meta refers to the “metaverse,” a concept that blends augmented (computer-generated) reality and virtual reality together. Experts believe metaverse technology will soon become the next big internet innovation.

Zuckerberg is jumping into the futuristic frontier. Meta will oversee all the company’s products, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, plus any new technology developed by the company.

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly with Facebook

The social media giant is getting into the holiday spirit by helping users get all their online shopping done in one place.

Facebook is bolstering its live shopping feature with a daily holiday series. The program, also available on Instagram, allows people to access exclusive drops, deals and complete purchases directly from the app using Facebook Pay.

According to Facebook, major retailers such as Walmart, Macy’s, Ulta Beauty and Benefit Cosmetics have agreed to participate in the holiday program.

Google Tries to Seal the Deal

Google is one step closer to bridging the gap between social media and search engine optimization, SEO.

The company is reportedly in negotiations with Instagram and TikTok to index their content into Google’s search results.

If the deal goes through, the search engine could turn into a destination for articles and videos from both social media platforms.

The proposal is similar to the one formed between Google and Twitter in 2015, in which Google was granted access to index and rank individual tweets and data.

Instagram Links for Everyone!

An early holiday present from Instagram…the social media platform is allowing all users to share hyperlinks on their stories and profiles via “link stickers.”

Previously, only verified accounts or accounts with 10,000+ followers could share links.

According to the social network, the sticker feature is useful for everyone—from businesses linking to their products, to influencers linking to external resources, and everyday users who want to engage with their followers and share content.

However, Instagram officials warn that people who use the link stickers to repeatedly share misinformation or hate speech will lose access to the feature—and their accounts.
