When I found out I had been named Ag Communicators Network’s Designer of the Year for the sixth time, I was genuinely speechless. To be recognized once is a huge honor—but to receive this award year after year? It’s humbling, and honestly, a little surreal.
Designing for the agricultural community is a unique and rewarding challenge. In this space, design isn’t just about making things visually appealing. It’s about creating clarity in complexity. It’s about building trust. And more than anything, it’s about connecting people—ranchers, farmers, landowners, educators—to tools and knowledge that help them make more informed decisions for their land and livelihoods. Over the years, I’ve learned that the best design doesn’t just look good—it works hard. It tells stories that matter to producers. It makes science more accessible. It helps educators and communicators do their jobs better.
What’s kept me inspired after all this time? A few things:
- Curiosity: Agriculture is always evolving. So is design. Staying inspired means being a student of both. I’m constantly learning—about soil health, livestock, rural community dynamics—and allowing that knowledge to influence my creative approach.
- Collaboration: I’ve been incredibly lucky to work alongside smart, passionate teammates—writers, videographers, photographers—who believe in the mission and push the work to be better every single time.
- Purpose: Knowing that our design work supports producers, stewards of the land, and people trying to make a difference is a huge motivator. It gives every project meaning, no matter how big or small.
- Respect for the audience: Whether it’s a rancher in Oklahoma or a landowner in Montana, I never forget who we’re designing for. Every color, font, photo, and layout choice is made with them in mind.
Now, as I step into a new role as a marketing communications director, I’ve had time to reflect on what this journey has meant to me—and what’s next. While I’m honored to carry the title of Designer of the Year, this marks the end of an era for me as a hands-on designer. I’m now shifting my focus to leading and supporting the incredible creative team that’s stepping up behind me.
I’ll still be closely connected to the work, but in a different way—championing strategy, creative direction, and collaboration across teams. I’m so proud of the legacy we’ve built, and even more excited for what’s ahead as others take the reins and make their own mark.
As we look forward to this awards season, I’m excited to pass the torch to the next generation of talented ACN designers. These designers are brimming with talent, fresh ideas, and a hunger to innovate while staying grounded in the values that define ag communications. They’re bringing fresh perspectives, big ideas, and the same deep commitment to serving this industry through powerful visual storytelling.
This award has meant the world to me, but the real legacy is the work—and the people—who continue to push it forward. I can’t wait to cheer them on from this new seat at the table.
