Podcast: Covering the Farm Bill with Jacqui Fatka

by Mary Kendall Dixon | Oct 12, 2018 | Podcast, The ByLine

By Kelsey Litchfield, Host of the Ag Comm Network Podcast

Many truth bombs were shared during this episode of the Ag Comm Network Podcast, so don’t wait any longer – press play!

Jacqui Fatka, policy editor at Farm Futures and Feedstuffs, joined Holly Spangler and I on the podcast and shares what her journey has been like as an agricultural communicator covering policy. Here’s five takeaways from our interview.

1. Put yourself out there if you’re interested in a job. Be up front with the organization/business and tell them you would like to work for them.

2. Take initiative when working in your career. If you see a specific need, create it.

3. Trust is a two-way street as a journalist. Earn your credibility as a journalist and build professional relationships with those you work with.

4. Learning doesn’t just happen in a classroom. Expand your sources and branch out to meet new people so you can expand your circle.

5. Ag communicators should hold themselves to a higher standard.

On the podcast, Jacqui also shares how she feels about policy reporting on Twitter, why she doesn’t tune in to Fox News or CNN, and her take on what’s next for the Farm Bill.

Trust me, this is an episode you’ll want to tune in to! Jacqui provides such powerful career advice that you’ll want to grab your notepad and write it all down. Thanks to Jacqui and Holly for taking time out of their busy schedules to chat!

Be sure to also check out Jacqui’s columns – D.C. Dialogue (Farm Futures) and Inside Washington (Feedstuffs). Thanks for tuning in!
