Meet Student Member: Kristen Smith!

By Ashlyn Rochester, ACN Communications Specialist

As part of the new and incoming student members, sponsored by Filament, we’re highlighting the new members. Kristen Smith is a student at South Dakota State University, where she studies Agriculture Communications. To get to know her better and understand why her student membership in ACN is important to her, we asked her a few questions.

1. Why are you studying agriculture?

I’m studying agriculture because it’s such a huge part of the world, and sometimes overlooked. I want to better communicate the story behind the farmers and ranchers that feed the world. From farm to fork it’s my mission to advocate and work to educate the people who may be unaware of where their food comes from and to be a voice in bridging that gap within the agricultural industry.

2. What position, goal, or outcome do you hope to accomplish with your agriculture degree?

Proceeding graduation, I plan to work with event planning, communication, and marketing within the agricultural industry, continuing to educate and communicate what agriculture is all about.

3. What do you hope to gain from your student membership to ACN? If it’s something specific, like a mentor or feedback, please be specific and include an email address for members to reach you at.

With a membership with ACN, I hope to gain knowledge about the agricultural industry and what opportunities it has to offer me and my peers. I hope to learn from others and share my words with the world.

4. As part of the application process, we ask applicants to write a few short paragraphs on the value of joining ACN, and why this would help the applicant in their career.

ACN would provide so many opportunities for me to grow personally and professionally. It would allow me to give back to the agricultural industry in more ways than one. Not only would it provide me with opportunities for myself but also the opportunities to network and grow relationships with similar and like-minded people like myself.

An ACN membership would help me in my career by allowing me to be a part of an organization that I’m so passionate about and that I can share my passions with others. This membership would let me grow as an individual and also set me up for a successful career and future.

Students can apply or be nominated for membership. Please share this with interested students and/or nominate a student today. Thank you, Filament, for investing in the future of Ag Communicators!

The application is available at this link.
