By Betsy Freese, Legacy Committee Chair

The Legacy Committee is made up of 11 members of our organization, each with at least 40 years of agricultural communications experience. Members are:

Betsy Freese, chair

Harlen Persinger

Fred Myers

Cheryl Tevis

Karen McMahon

Paul Queck

Jack Pitzer

Kurt Lawton

Kelly Schwalbe

JoAnn Alumbaugh

Lyle Orwig

This committee is responsible for the nomination process and selection of the ACN Distinguished Service Award, ACN Lifetime Achievement Award, and ACN Fellows (mid-career members). This committee oversees the ACN archives and other duties related to the history of ACN. This committee may also develop new programs to recognize both current and retired members.

The Lifetime Achievement Award (LAA) is designed to honor current and former members of the organization for their outstanding achievements. Recipients of the award are recognized for leadership, with specific emphasis on their contributions toward improving the viability and value of ACN. Two former presidents of ACN, Greg Lamp and Karen McMahon, were recipients in 2023.

The Distinguished Service Award (DSA) honors a leader who gives something back to the agricultural community through outstanding efforts in education, science, or public affairs. The recipient is currently active in their field. The 2023 Distinguished Service Award was given to Don Wirth, an innovative Oregon farmer and promoter of cover crops and forage.

Our committee welcomes and encourages nominations from all members for these awards. I can be reached by email: [email protected] or phone: 515-229-8050. Happy New Year!
