PRETORIA, South Africa (3 April, 2017)—Gil Gullickson of Successful Farming magazine in the United States was honored with the IFAJ/FAO Award for Food Security Reporting at the annual world congress of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) near Pretoria, South Africa, on April 3. 
The theme of this year’s contest was “The Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture, Forest and Fisheries.”
Judges Busani Bufana of Zimbabwe, Paul Queck of the Unites States and Magnus Stark of Sweden selected Gullickson’s story from entries written by journalists in countries from Bangladesh to Britain.
One judge said Gullickson’s article, “Weatherproof Your Farm (Sort Of),” delivered an “impressive account explaining the varied impacts climate change poses on the foundation of all crop and livestock productivity: soil.”
Another liked its use of multiple sources and the fact that it delivered “ideas on improving soil resiliency to cope with weather extremes.”
Steve Werblow, secretary general of IFAJ, said the article “was engaging and informative, presenting real-world insight from several great sources. The story challenges readers to consider how their farms compare to the operations profiled in the article and frame an important discussion in highly relevant, practical terms.”
