Occasionally, AAEA members get the chance to spread their wings beyond our industry, giving others insight into U.S. agriculture. Chris Clayton, DTN/The Progressive Farmer, recently had that opportunity when his piece, “The agriculture beat is a crucial lens on a changing climate,” appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review.
“National Public Radio had interviewed me about covering agriculture and climate change right after the president’s announcement over withdrawal from the Paris agreement,” Chris shares. “An editor from Columbia Journalism Review then reached out to me over the summer and asked if I would be willing to contribute to a series of articles CJR is publishing on the different ways news media can report on climate topics.
“The idea of writing a piece for CJR was pretty exciting. We were dealing with Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria at the time so the havoc going on provided some context for the piece as well. I’ve gotten a lot of positive response from the article, including from a few farm organizations asking me to speak on climate issues.”
