By Melanie Ruberti, AAEA Communications Coordinator
If you’ve ever attended the Ag Media Summit, participated in a webinar, read the weekly ByLine newsletter, received professional development advice or won an AAEA Communications award, then thank the committee and members who provided those services and volunteered their time.
Volunteer members who serve on committees are the backbone of the Ag Communicators Network. These groups work together for the good of the organization. They enhance the value of what AAEA provides for its members, such as new learning opportunities and specialized programs, like webinars. Committee members dedicate their time to helping members and themselves become better ag communicators.
Kenna Rathai, VP of Public Relations, broadhead
Just ask 2021-22 Ag Communicators Network Board Member Kenna Rathai. She is a member of the International and Communications / ByLine committees, and will be the Ag Media Summit Steering Committee Chair for 2022.
“The great thing about this organization is there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved, depending on what your goals are and what time you have available,” she explained. “Are you looking for leadership and a team collaboration experience that you’re not getting in your current job? Do you appreciate networking with others in the industry? Do you want to get a brief assignment that you can complete quickly? Do you want to positively impact professional development choices? Do you like brainstorming ideas? If so, we have a variety of committees for you. Join us!”
Mike Wilson, Director of Content, Farm Progress
2017 Past President Mike Wilson agreed. He currently serves on the Advisory committee.
“The Ag Communicators Network is a grassroots organization, and the committees are where the groundwork takes place for future direction of the organization,” Wilson stated. “Getting involved in a committee is a great, first step to becoming active in AAEA. There are many different areas of interest where you can make a big difference in the future of our profession.”
Mindy Ward, Senior Content Director, Farm Progress
According to 2022 President Mindy Ward, serving on a committee helps the organization become stronger and smarter.
“Serving on Ag Communicators Network committees offered me the opportunity to learn more about the association, connect with other ag communicators, promote our profession, and have a whole lot of fun in the process,” AAEA President Mindy Ward stated. “It’s truly been a highlight of my time in the organization.”
Megan Schilling, Agronomy & Technology Editor
Meredith Agrimedia
Future Ag Communicators Committee Chairwoman Megan Schilling agreed.
“AAEA committees offer the opportunity to do meaningful work and make a real difference,” she said. “The committees allow you to grow as an individual— and have the chance to see your colleagues and the industry grow and change too.”
AAEA committees also promote camaraderie between members— whether you’re a veteran in the ag communications industry or a rookie new to the field.
Holly Martin, Director of Communications
American Angus Association
“I always enjoy my time working with AAEA committees. I’m helping AAEA and connecting with other members at the same time,” AAEA Professional Improvement Foundation Treasurer Holly Martin explained.
If you’re passionate about the Ag Communicators Network and want to make a positive difference in the organization, industry and yourself, now’s the time to step up to the plate and serve on a committee.
Visit this site to read more information about all the AAEA committees, then take the Committee Interest Survey. But do it quickly—the deadline to submit a survey is Friday, September 24th.
