Member Spotlight: Maggie Malson

by Mary Kendall Dixon | Jul 9, 2020 | Member Resources, The ByLine

Where did you go to college?

Kansas State University

Where do you work and how long have you worked there?

I am the owner of Maggie Malson Communications and have been for 18 years. I worked as a magazine publisher for 13 years in addition to doing freelance work. Currently I do contract writing, photography, marketing and design for agriculture clients.

Why did you pursue a career in ag communications?

I knew I wanted to be involved in agriculture as I grew up a farmer’s daughter. I also always enjoyed writing and English. In college, I attended the LPC/AAEA annual meeting, and met a lot of the publishers and editors who worked for magazines I grew up seeing my dad read. I knew that was the career path for me.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?

Interviewing and photographing farmers and ranchers is my favorite part. I love to hear about their families and operations, and in turn be able to tell their story to a broader audience.

What’s one piece of career advice you wish someone had given you?

Travel internationally. This wasn’t something that I heard a lot about or was really encouraged to do. Looking back, I wish I had taken the opportunity to learn more about agriculture in other parts of the world.
