By Ryan Ebert, W.D. Hoards and Sons
For the past ten years I’ve served as a visual storyteller for agricultural operations around the world. Growing up on a small hog and poultry farm in southern Wisconsin I never thought I would have a career that allowed me to blend my passions for agriculture and art. I’ve been fortunate enough, though, to do just that as the Art Director for Hoard’s Dairyman and, more recently, Hay & Forage Grower.
Very early in my career I attended my first Ag Media Summit in Louisville, KY. At that summit, I made many great connections with fellow ag communication professionals and learned about the various committees and professional development programs associated with AAEA. While that first year I just dipped my toes in the water I eventually dove in to get involved with AAEA as much as possible.
For eight years I’ve served on the photography committee working to further develop the contest and figure out new ways to enable members to improve their photojournalism skills. During this time I’ve served as co-chair and chair of this talented group. Additionally, over the past six years I’ve also served on the design committee, assisted AMS as a session moderator, and been a speaker for a session geared towards beginning photographers. At the 2015 AMS in Scottsdale, I was honored to be elected to the AAEA Board of Directors. It’s proving to be a truly valuable experience in helping guide the future of this great organization.
In 2016, I experienced the proudest moment of my career thus far as I was humbled to receive the Andy Markwart Horizon Award. While I joined AAEA shortly after Andy’s passing and didn’t know him personally, I do know he was an integral member of AAEA. I’m honored to know that my peers feel I embody the same youthful vigor, energy, passion, dedication and creativity shown by Andy.
This award and associated stipend will open new doors for me. My plans are to use it to attend an IFAJ meeting to explore the international ag world. I would encourage anyone thinking about applying for the award to do so. AAEA has so much to offer, it’s up to you to go after it.
