Congratulations to our 2019-2020 AAEA President, Gil Gullickson on winning this award!
Gil Gullickson received the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) 2020 AgTech Reporting Award for “Yours, Mine and Ours,” a feature article on outcome-based pricing for commodities that he wrote for Successful Farming, a leading U.S. farm magazine.
One judge noted that in Gullickson’s hands, the complicated topic was “covered with insight and look into detail,” while another pointed out that it was “an interesting topic with headline points well articulated.”
Steve Werblow, secretary-general of IFAJ, added, “Gil’s story is a wonderful example of clear-eyed reporting that allows readers to consider both the opportunities and challenges posed by a new approach to input pricing. Great writing like his highlights the vital role agricultural journalists play in presenting their readers with accurate, timely insight into new technologies that are shaping agriculture.”
The judges awarded Runner-Up honors to Northern Ireland journalist Rachel Martin of Agriland for “Dutch Firm to Test ‘Cow Toilets’ to Cut Farm Ammonia Emissions.” One judge commented on Martin’s great puns and the fun she injected into the writing, but was also sure to commend “a flowing style that made me want to continue to read.”
Judges for the contest included Dr. Belinda Clarke, director of Agri-Tech East in the U.K.; Luke Halsey, head and programme manager at Farm491 at Britain’s Royal Agricultural University; and Adrian Krebs, editor-in-chief of Swiss farm magazine BauernZeitung. The AgTech Reporting Award was presented June 26 in a global online ceremony. Journalists from Europe, North America and South Africa entered their work.
